New Delhi : The Congress party began a series of briefings to its MPs on the suspended FDI in retail decision, with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee saying the move could have helped contain inflation.
Commerce Minister Anand Sharma will follow suit with a briefing on Friday.
Mukherjee said that the FDI will bridge the gap between the farm-gate and the retail prices.
The finance minister also spoke about the measures taken to check the stashing away of black money from the country, but added that it was impossible to publicise the names of the Indian account holders in tax havens.
Mukherjee pointed out that India is bound by international agreements. Making public the names of account holders in foreign countries will affect the inflow of further information.
