As per information received here this morning, three students studying in the A. K. Vidya Mandir study centre Chandigarh had drowned in the Yamuna river early this morning.
They were four friends who had come from Chandigarh and were on way to Dehra Dun for a picnic and to meet their common friends also. Three lost their lives in the Yamuna river while fourth succeeded to save his life as he had some knowledge of swimming. This 19 years old boy Abhishek, resident of Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh informed local residents, visitors in Gurudwara and police regarding this incident.
Dead bodies of drowned boys including one girl have been fished out from the river. Eyewitnesses said that at 5.30 A.M. boys had gone to take bath in the holy Yamuna river after paying obeisance in the Gurudwara. With a playful mood, boys went deep in the Yamuna River where three of them drowned while one could save himself as he had some knowledge of swimming. Those died had been identified as Miss Heman [18] resident of Bhupinder Nagar, Patiala [Punjab], Snehal Kumar [18] resident of Mandi [Himachal Pradesh] and Vijay Anand [19], resident of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh.
Giving detail of the incident Abhishek only surviving friend of deceased youngsters narrated the whole incident with his trembling voice in the police station, said that when they entered Yamuna river for a bath at about 5.30 A.M. the light was very poor and they could not see the depth of water. He said that they were in playful mood and tried to touch a pillar enacted by the Dam construction authorities in the mid of Yamuna river. First of all girl Heman reached near this pillar and drowned, after that two other friends reached near this pillar and disappeared. In the darkness no body could adjudge as what was going on. He also reached at the same point, the river was very deep at this point but he could save himself as he knew swimming.
Mr Narvir Rathour, SHO Paonta told this correspondent that boys reached around 4 A.M. at Paonta, they visited Gurudwara and went to take a bath. All the dead bodies were laying in the bottom of the Dam pillar where water is very deep. He ruled out any foul play in this case and said that it was a pure case of accident. He said that parents of the deceased had been informed by the police. Chandigarh students were in holiday mood and were on way to Dehra Dun, SHO added.
