Shimla: A weak monsoon may have hit farm productivity in the countryside but less of runoff water has contained silt flows in Satluj River, giving the 1500 MW Jhakri plant a trouble free generating season which has enabled it to beat stiff targets. The plant is expected to surpass its record generation in a year.
Vijay Verma, SJVNL spokesman stated that for the third month in a row the country’s largest hydro plant has generated more than 1000 million units of electricity.
In June the plant generated 1144 MU, in July 1071 MU and in August the plant has generated 1069 MU of electricity, said Verma.
Against a target of 2974 MU for June – August period the plant has generated 3284 MU of power surpassing the government of India’s target by 310 MU.
The target for 2009-10 is 6500 MU and in a trouble free run of five months the Jhakri plant has already generated 4370 MU between April and August.
This record generation has been achieved by the power station at a time when the country at large was facing acute shortage in generation at its major hydro power stations due to low monsoon and inflow in the rivers.
The Jhakri power station is supplying valuable power to the northern grid states consisting of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakahnd, Chandigarh & Delhi.
NC Bansal, plant head at Jhakri informed that the record generation had been achieved because of excellent management of silt, water and machines.
