Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh’s biggest initiative to empower youth with skills and jobs was launched here today by Governor Nirbhay Sharma with the aim of ending unemployment in the state in 10 years.
The “job mela-cum-skill development selection rally” will see the participation of over 12,000 young people over the next three days.
Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said the government would bear the cost of training the youth, expected to last three to six months.
“I am making a sacrifice. I am spending on the youth by taking money out of other projects like road construction. This is to build the future of the state,” Tuki said.
He said unemployment was growing in Arunachal Pradesh at 15 percent annually. It was estimated to be about two lakh of the state’s population of 14 lakh.
“We want to create one lakh employment opportunities in the current five year plan,” Tuki said.
He said the target was to create 25,000 employment opportunities this year and provide employment to all the youth in the state in the next 10 years.
Tuki asked youth to seize opportunities in the private sector both inside and outside the state.
The governor said about 55 percent of the state’s population was in the employable age group of 15 to 59 years. He said the young should not be shy of moving out of the state.
More than 14,000 unemployed youths, including women, have registered for the rally, officials said.
“We expect that at least 70 percent of the selected youth will be absorbed in jobs after training,” an official said.
