Agartala, June 10 (IANS) The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Tripura has dropped 4.22 percent of its members for various reasons in the past one year as part of a “rectification move” of the party cadres, a top party leader said here Monday.
According to CPI-M state secretary Bijan Dhar, after the process of renewal of membership was completed in March, the total party membership now stood at 84,141 — an increase of 3.33 percent over 2012.
“The process of rectification of party cadres and leaders is on. Over 230 party members have been expelled and membership of 3,036 persons (4.22 percent) has been dropped for various reasons during the past one year,” Dhar told reporters.
Expressing satisfaction over the growth of the party in Tripura, Dhar, also the CPI-M’s central committee member, said: “Altogether 2,713 new members have enrolled in the party over the past year.”
Dhar said that at present women form 25.82 percent of the CPI-M’s membership, while 26.5 percent belong to the working class. Landless people constitute 27.93 percent, and poor farmers represent 24.38 percent of total membership.
