Stockholm, June 9 (IANS) Swedish Princess Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine married Christopher O’Neill, a US banker, here Saturday in a ceremony attended by the Royals, business tycoons and celebrities.
The bridegroom, however, has opted to remain a private citizen and not be granted the royal rank, Xinhua reported.
O’Neill, who is an American citizen, will continue his business activities as before despite marrying the princess. Thus, he will not hold the title of Prince of Sweden.
The royal protocol requires a member of the royal family should be a Swedish citizen, and should not hold a position of responsibility within business. Christopher O’Neill had urged to remain a private citizen and not to be granted royal rank.
The wedding event was held in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Stockholm.
According to the Swedish Royal Court, the 1982-born Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine, princess of Sweden, Duchess of Halsingland and Gastrikland, is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
