Guwahati, June 19 (IANS) In continuing operations against illegal trade of rhino horn, police in Assam’s Jorhat district Wednesday recovered a rhino horn worth lakhs of rupees.
Jorhat Superintendent of Police Sanjyukta Parashar told IANS that the recovery followed a raid on the house of a man, Ajay Patra, in Lahdoigarh area. Patra is on the run, she said.
“The horn weighed a little over one kg,” she said.
Police feel poachers may have killed the rhino at the Kaziranga National Park, which is close to Jorhat district.
At least 20 one-horned rhinos from the park have been killed since January this year.
Last year, at least 12 rhinos were killed in the park, a Unesco World Heritage Site.
The spate in poaching of rhinos has forced the Assam government to seek a CBI probe. The agency has registered three cases of poaching.
