Beijing, June 2 (IANS) One person was killed and 18 others were injured, one of them critically, in an earthquake that shook Taiwan’s Nantou County Sunday afternoon, according to the island’s fire-fighting authorities.
It was a 6.7-magnitude earthquake, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, but Taiwan’s earthquake authorities measured it at 6.3 on the Richter scale, reported Xinhua.
A villager from neighbouring Chiayi County died after being hit by a falling rock.
So far, there have been no reports of deaths or injuries among visitors from the mainland, said Man Hongwei, head of the Taipei office of the Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Strait.
Cable-car services in the nearby Riyuetan (Sun Moon Lake) scenic spot have been halted. Electricity supply has been retored in affected areas, local authorities said.
