Buenos Aires, June 11 (IANS) An Argentine first division football match was abandoned Monday after a fan was killed and another badly injured in clashes with riot police.
The incident occurred before Lanus’s match with Estudiantes at the Ciudad de la Plata stadium in Buenos Aires province, reports Xinhua.
Officials decided to call the game off when they were informed of the news at half-time.
“Police reported that a (Lanus) supporter had died and in the face of this situation it was necessary to suspend the match,” Estudiantes president Enrique Lombardi said.
“It was a unanimous decision by both clubs. It was for humanitarian reasons.”
The tragedy comes just three days after Velez Sarsfield’s home fixture against All Boys was abandoned due to fan violence.
Estudiantes were leading Monday’s match 2-0 when the match was ended.
