Odisha announces compensation for rain-hit farmers

Bhubaneswar, June 19 (IANS) Odisha Wednesday announced compensation for the farmers who sustained losses due to heavy rain and consequent floods last week in various parts of the state.

According to a statement issued by the office of the chief minister, farmers would be compensated at the rate of Rs.2,000 per hectare, if they have sustained losses of 50 percent of their crops, or more.

Farmers will also be entitled to agricultural input subsidy of Rs.3,000 per hectare for rain-fed areas and Rs.6,000 per hectare for irrigated areas.

The repayment of the crop loans of affected farmers shall be deferred for a period of one year, without any change in the rate of interest applicable, the statement said.

Besides, crop loans during the current Kharif season shall be made available to the affected farmers, and they shall not be treated as defaulters for non-payment of existing loans.

Incessant rain during June 12-14 and consequent floods damaged standing crops and harvested paddy stacked in fields under open skies in southern parts of the state.
