Narayana Murthy’s son to join Infosys as his assistant

Bangalore, June 1 (IANS) Rohan Murty, son of Infosys co-founder and re-appointed executive chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy, will join the company as an executive assistant to his father, the company announced here Saturday.

Infosys said in a statement that Narayana Murthy has requested the board to permit him to put together a team to allow him to function more effectively.

The team will include his son, Rohan, as Narayana Murthy’s executive assistant.

Rohan is a junior fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University.

He has a Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Cornell University. He has held fellowships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Caltech, and Microsoft Research.

If appointed, Rohan’s term as executive assistant to the chairman would be co-terminus with that of Narayana Murthy, the company statement said.

“Rohan Murthy has requested that he should also be paid only a token compensation of Re.1 per year,” it said.

Rohan is a junior fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard University.

IT industry honchos and market analysts welcomed Murthy’s reappointment as chairman of the company.

“At this juncture it will be good for both Infosys and the industry. I welcome (Narayana) Murthy’s return to Infosys in executive role,” said Nasscom president Som Mittal.

Chief of Biocon Kiran Mazumdar Shaw applauded the appointment, saying it Murthy’s return must have been driven by the perception of the company in the last few years.

“This is a very welcome development. Infosys needs a hands-on leadership to manage operations,” Shaw said.

India’s second-largest software exporter recalled Narayana Murthy as executive chairman for five years, as the company is grappling with a string of disappointing results and loss of market share.
