Buenos Aires, June 15 (IANS) Former Formula 1 driver Jose Froilan Gonzalez of Argentina died Saturday at the age of 90.
He is notably known for winning Ferrari’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1951.
Knicknamed as ‘Pampas Bull’, the Argentine started 22 World Championship races, adding a second British Grand Prix win with Ferrari in 1954. He also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1954.
Born in Arrecifes, Argentina Oct 10, 1922, he raced in Formula 1 from 1950-57 and 1960 with Maserati, Ferrari, Vanwall and Talbot-Lago.
Gonzalez finished runner-up to Juan Manuel Fangio in 1954 in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship.
