Lucknow, June 14 (IANS) A woman was assaulted and her daughter burnt to death in an Uttar Pradesh village by the family of a young man the victim loved and wanted to marry, police said Friday.
The gory incident occurred in Karahkol village in Deoria district, 475 km from Lucknow. Two of the seven accused have been arrested.
Police said the young woman, Manju, was in love with Ranjit of the same village. The boy’s family opposed the relationship, and the panchayat met to settle the row.
Manju’s mother pleaded that since the two were in love, they should be allowed to marry.
Incensed by this, Jai Hind, the young man’s father, and members of his family assaulted Manju’s mother and rained blows and kicks on her.
When Manju rushed to help her mother, members of Ranjit’s family doused her with kerosene and set her on fire. She died before she could be taken to a hospital.
