Thousands meditate online to mark African Union golden jubilee

Bangalore, May 26 (IANS) About 10,000 people from 23 African countries joined an online meditation session held by Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to mark the golden jubilee of the African Union, organisers said Sunday, a day after the event.

“Meditation creates positive vibrations. Today, it is much needed in Africa,” Ravi Shankar, who conducted the “I Meditate Africa”, programme said, according to a media release from the ‘Art of Living (AoL)’ organisation founded by him.

People from Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Tunisia, Nigeria, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Namibia, Mauritius, Morocco, DRC, Zambia, Ethiopia, Togo, Suda and South Africa took part in what the AoL described as “first-of-its-kind” online meditation programme, the release said.

The programme started with 2,800 students meditating for peace in Soweto, South Africa it said.

Among the people who participated in the online meditation programme at Durban, South Africa, was Ela Gandhi, grand-daughter of Mahatma Gandhi, the release said.

The Africa-wide campaign was “to promote meditation as a practical tool to achieve individual peace, improved health, increased productivity and clarity of mind. This Art of Living initiative aims to bring people together to create a positive wave of social transformation,” it said.
