Jaipur, May 10 (IANS) A Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator in Rajasthan was arrested Friday on charges of arson and destroying public property during a farmers’ agitation nine years ago, police said.
Pawan Duggal represents Sri Ganganagar’s Anupgarh constituency.
According to a senior police officer, police cases had been registered against more than 1,000 farmers and Duggal in October 2004 after farmers, demanding water from the Indira Gandhi Canal, set ablaze several government offices and attacked policemen in Gharsana area of the district, some 600 km from Jaipur.
He added that an investigation was completed against the legislator recently.
“Duggal was arrested from his residence in Anupgarh today (Friday) and produced in a court, which sent him to judicial custody,” said the officer.
