New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday sought a report from Uttar Pradesh Police over five women being assaulted in Lalitpur district.
“Five women workers of an NGO called Sahjani Shiksha Kendra were beaten with lathis by some influential people in Lalitpur district. We have sought a report from Uttar Pradesh deputy general of police within 15 days,” an official of the NHRC said here.
While three women belonged to other backward castes, two were Dalits.
The incident occurred May 15 when they were launching an adult literacy centre for Dalit women in village Digwara in Lalitpur.
“The commission has also asked its (Uttar Pradesh’s) director general (investigation) to depute a team to conduct an on-the-spot inquiry,” said the official.
“The culprits abused the women and beat them. An FIR (first information report) was lodged with police, who did not take any action,” the official said.
