Havana, May 4 (IANS) Cuban baseball manager Victor Mesa, who led the national team to a fifth place at the III World Classic, will continue for the next fours years till 2017.
Cuban Baseball Federation President Higinio Velez said that Mesa will continue for the next fours years, reports Xinhua.
“The national leadership of baseball, along with the direction of the National Sports Institute (INDER), has decided that Victor Mesa is the manager of the Cuba team through this 2013-2017 cycle,” Velez told the national TV.
Velez said that a team manager must serve for a “minimum of four years, so to create a way to lead and conduct on and off the field. The players and technicians will know that this is their manager, and they must obey him during that period”.
Mesa, 53, former centre fielder star, won the Olympic title in Barcelona-1992, has been five times world champion, and also led the Mexican team.
The Cuban team will participate in tournaments in Holland, Canada, United States, Chinese Taipei and Panama.
Cuban has won 25 Olympic and three world titles, but a major win has eluded them since winning the World Cup in Holland, 2005.
