Durban, May 14 (IANS) An Indian-origin doctor was shot dead outside his surgery at Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.
Dr Bhavish Sewram was shot three times in his neck, back and arm through his car window Monday night, the Independent Online reported Tuesday.
Police have launched a manhunt for the killer who fled after the shooting, wearing a “white hoodie”.
“The suspect, who was clad in a white ‘hoodie’, ran down Greytown Road and into the nearby informal settlement,” the report quoted police officer Joey Jeevan as saying.
Though the victim’s family has refrained from speaking to the media, close friends were quoted as saying that Sewram had faced another attempt on his life earlier.
In that incident, masked gunmen had stopped his car in front of Sewram’s surgery and fired rubber bullets at him, severely injuring him.
When the doctor filed a case following the incident, his family started to receive threatening calls.
Son-in-law of another prominent doctor of Indian origin in Pietermaritzburg, Prakash Singh, Sewram leaves behind his wife, who is an accountant, and two daughters aged five and three.
