San Juan, May 31 (IANS/EFE) Prominent Puerto Rican entertainers such as Daddy Yankee, Victor Manuelle and Tito Nieves will take part in this year’s charity walkathon to benefit cancer patients at San Juan’s Hospital Oncologico.
Other artists who plan to participate include Grupo Mania, Abraham and Chucho Avellanet, the organizer of the annual event, comedian Raymond Arrieta, told a press conference.
The walkers will set out June 6 from the Palacio de los Deportes in the western city of Mayagüez, passing through 13 municipalities before they arrive June 13 at San Juan’s Roberto Clemente coliseum.
This year’s walk will cover 193 km.
The celebrity participants who will accompany Arrieta and other volunteers on individual segments of the journey are “not looking for attention”, but simply want to help, the comic said.
Last year, Daddy Yankee and collaborator De La Ghetto joined the walk for the final leg from suburban Bayamon to the studios of the Telemundo outlet in San Juan.
The 2013 procession will culminate with a free concert by Luis Fonsi at the Clemente coliseum.
The walkathons have raised more than $2 million since their inception, according to Arrieta, host of the Telemundo show “Dia a Dia”.
