New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) Soumyajit Ghosh and Mouma Das made the mixed doubles final at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships here Thursday, a day on which India made sure of at least seven medals in the individual competitions.
Ghosh and Mouma beat top seeds from Singapore, Yang Zi and Yu Mengyu, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10, in the semifinals. They will meet another Singaporean pair, Zhan Jian and Zhou Yihan, in the title clash to be held later in the evening.
The two medals are assured from the women’s doubles courtesy Mouma and Shamini Kumaresan, and Neha Aggarwal and Madhurika Patkar, who won their respective quarterfinals.
Mouma-Shamini got past Malaysia’s Lee Wei Beh and Sock Khim NG 11-3, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7 while the Neha-Madhurika pairing dispatched compatriots Divya Deshpande and Pooja Sahasrabudhe 12-10, 11-4, 11-3.
Pooja plays Manika Batra in the women’s singles quarterfinals and the winner of the match will get a bronze. Barring mixed doubles, the semifinals and finals of the other events will be held Friday, the concluding day of the tournament.
Defending men’s doubles champions Sharath Kamal and Subhajit Saha are also through to the semifinals.
India won a silver and bronze in the team championships which ended Wednesday.
