Dubai, May 24 (IANS/WAM) Dubai Customs has foiled a bid to smuggle 259 pieces of ivory that arrived from Africa at its Jebel Ali Customs Centre.
The ivory items fall under the endangered fauna and flora category, in which international trade is prohibited by the CITES Convention.
Dubai Customs inspectors seized the shipment “using advanced inspection techniques”, an official said.
“The smugglers tried to pass the shipment in the guise of timber furniture as disclosed in the customs declaration about the items. However, our vigilant inspectors foiled their attempt,” said Ahmed Bin Lahej, director of Jebel Ali Customs Centre.
