New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) Forty-two cases of paid news have been confirmed in the 14th Karnataka assembly polls, an official of the Election Commission (EC) said Sunday.
“Out of 76 cases of paid news which came to light, 42 cases were confirmed. We had issued notice in 61 such cases,” the official said.
He added that 1,127,000 litres of liquor – worth Rs.7.79 crore – was seized by the EC.
The May 5 election to the 224-member Karnataka assembly has 2,948 candidates in the fray, including 170 women.
The ruling BJP in the state, the Congress, the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s newly-formed Karnataka Janata Party (KJP), are contesting in all the constituencies. One seat is nominated.
