Washington, April 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Guards at the Guantanamo prison fired less-than-lethal rounds in a clash with detainees wielding “improvised weapons”, the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has said.
Detainees attempted to limit the guard force’s ability to observe their activities by covering surveillance cameras, windows, and glass partitions, an official statement Saturday said.
“In order to re-establish proper observation, the guards entered the Camp VI communal living spaces to transition detainees into single cells,” the statement reads.
“Some detainees resisted with improvised weapons, and in response, four less-than-lethal rounds were fired.”
No serious injuries to guards or detainees were reported.
The incident occurred amid an ongoing hunger strike by detainees. Last week, US military said the strike involved about 40 of the 166 detainees.
The Guantanamo Bay detention camp is a detainment and interrogation facility of the US military located within Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba.
