Lucknow, April 2 (IANS) An undertrial was shot dead and a lawyer was injured when unidentified assailants opened fire at them in the Hapur court complex Tuesday, police said.
The shooting occurred in the district court complex in western Uttar Pradesh when Ashok Bhati, an undertrial from Noida, was brought for a hearing.
Hapur Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Raghav told IANS that three people on a motorcycle fired at Bhati when police were taking him to a courtroom.
Bhati was killed in the shooting and a lawyer was wounded.
Bhati was involved in many robberies and was a history sheeter. Police believe he was killed by a rival gang. Security has been beefed up at the court premises.
A manhunt is on to nab the attackers, police said.
