Sparta Rotterdam names new coach until end of season

The Hague, April 4 (IANS) Henk ten Cate was Thursday named the new coach of Dutch second division side Sparta Rotterdam until the end of this season.

The 58-year-old Dutchman quit as coach of Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan in September last year, following disappointing results in the Chinese Super League. Since his resignation in China, he has been without a club, reports Xinhua.

Among other clubs Ten Cate had previously been active with as head coach are Ajax Amsterdam and Panathinaikos and as assistant at FC Barcelona and Chelsea. He was coach of Sparta Rotterdam from 1995 until 1997. In 1995-1996 he led Sparta to a sixth place in the Eredivisie and the Cup final.

After 16 years, Ten Cate now returns to Sparta as successor of coach Michel Vonk, who was fired Tuesday.

After three defeats in a row, Sparta dropped to third position. The club’s aim is to secure the championship and direct promotion to the Eredivisie this year, the year of the club’s 125th anniversary.
