Six vehicle lifters arrested with weapons in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, April 19 (IANS) A gang of six vehicle lifters, involved in more than 120 cases of vehicle thefts, was busted following their arrest along with firearms here early Friday, police said.

The gang members were planning to strike again when a team of Crime Branch Sohna, led by Sub-Inspector Sunil Kumar, arrested them near G.D. Goenka Public School on Sohna Road.

“They opened fire at the police party while trying to escape,” Police Commissioner Alok Mittal said.

The gang members, all in their 20s, have been identified as Saddam, Shakir, Gurdeep Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Prahlad and Akbar. Five of the six auto lifters hail from Jurhera village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district.

A Bolero pickup, and five country-made pistols and cartridges were recovered from their possession.

During interrogation, they admitted to their involvement in more than 120 incidents of vehicle thefts from various parts of Haryana’s Gurgaon district.

Cases against them were registered at the Sohna police station, about 25 km from here.
