Mumbai, April 8 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading flat late afternoon Monday. There was heavy selling in information technology (IT), bank, consumer goods and metal stocks.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,455.80 points, was trading at 18,428.08 points at 2.30 p.m., down 22.15 points or 0.12 percent from its previous day’s close at 18,450.23 points.
The Sensex slumped to a low of 18,402.93 points in the intra-day trade and touched a high of 18,504.48 points.
The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was trading 0.15 percent or 8.60 points down at 5,544.65 points in the late trading hours.
The BSE IT index was down 91.94 points, followed by bank index, down 87.97 points; capital goods index, down 78.31 points; metal index, down 56.16 points; and technology, media and entertainment (TECk), down 31.00 points.
However, the health care index was up 77.64 points, while the consumer durables index gained 77.63 oints and the oil and gas index went up 56.73 points.
Among other Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei was at 2.80 percent higher, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 0.04 percent down. China’s Shanghai Composite Index too closed 0.62 percent lower.
