Rourkela Steel Plant achieves best annual production

Bhubaneswar, April 3 (IANS) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of the state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Wednesday said it had achieved its best production in fiscal 2012-13 that ended March 31.

The steel plant at Rourkela in Odisha, 514 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, produced 23,65,824 tonnes of hot metal – a growth of 2.5 percent over the corresponding period last year, the company said in a statement.

By making 22,07,282 tonnes of crude steel and 21,44,344 tonnes of saleable steel, the plant recorded an improvement of 1.7 percent and 3.09 percent over corresponding period last year.

RSP realised more than 100 percent capacity utilisation in all the three key production areas like hot metal (118.6 percent), crude steel (116.2 percent) and saleable steel (128.3 percent), the statement said.

By producing 36,16,593 tonnes of sinter, the plant not only registered a grow th of 4.8 percent over corresponding period last year but also clocked its best-ever performance, it said.

RSP is the first integrated steel plant in the public sector in India was set up with German collaboration with an installed capacity of one million tonnes. Subsequently, its capacity was enhanced to 1.9 million tonnes.
