Chandigarh, April 11 (IANS) The Punjab Vigilance Bureau Thursday arrested a senior transport department official and his two guards for accepting a bribe from a transporter, an official said.
Vigilance Bureau chief director and Director General of Police Suresh Arora said the district transport officer (DTO) of Moga district, Gurtej Singh was nabbed while accepting bribe from Avtar Singh, a transporter from Rampura Phul town in Bathinda district.
“The vigilance bureau caught Gurtej Singh along with two constables Sukhjit Singh and Didar Singh posted as his guards for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs.16,000 from Avtar Singh,” Arora said.
He added that the transporter had filed a complaint with the vigilance bureau recently that the DTO was demanding bribe on monthly basis for not issuing challan tickets.
The complainant also said that he had already paid Rs.16,000 to the DTO but the officer was demanding more money.
The bureau laid a trap and the officer and his two guards were caught red-handed. The bribe money was recovered from their possession. All three have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Moga town is 160 km from here.
