Chandigarh, April 12 (IANS) The Punjab government Friday dissolved all the 12,775 panchayats in the state to pave the way for fresh village councils elections.
Announcing the dissolution of the all panchayats, Punjab Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra said that the election process would be completed before May 31. The election notification would be issued within one week, he added.
Rakhra said Punjab was committed to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
He said that after the dissolution of panchayats, block development and panchayat officers (BDPOs), panchayat officers and junior engineers have been given administrative powers so that day to day work of village councils does not suffer.
He said that 399 new panchayats have been constituted and the election would be held for 13,110 panchayats.
