New Delhi, April 17 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a message to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, has condoled the loss of lives in an earthquake that hit Pakistan Tuesday.
Saying he was “deeply saddened” to learn of the damage and loss of life caused by the earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, the prime minister Wednesday said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost their dear ones, sustained injuries or suffered damage to their property.”
He said he was confident that under Zardari’s leadership, the Pakistani government and the people “will come together to respond quickly and effectively to the natural disaster and help people rebuild their lives”.
At least 40 people were killed and over 300 injured in a powerful earthquake that rocked Pakistan.
The quake hit southern and southwestern parts of Pakistan in the afternoon with its epicentre located at a depth of 76 km in Iran’s mountainous area of Khash near Pakistan border.
