New Delhi, April 17 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday condoled the loss of lives and destruction in the massive earthquake that struck Iran and offered all possible assistance in relief efforts.
In a message to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the prime minister said he learnt of the quake with deep sorrow. “The people of India join me in conveying our deepest condolences for the loss of life, injury and destruction of property as a result of this natural disaster.”
He said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Iran. I am confident that with the support of your government, the people of Iran will respond to this tragedy with their characteristic resolve and resilience and will succeed in restoring normalcy quickly”.
India was “prepared to provide all assistance within our means to support your efforts to provide relief to the affected people”, he said.
At least 40 people were killed when a huge earthquake struck southeastern Iran Tuesday. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan near the border with Pakistan.
