Panaji, April 10 (IANS) Playboy clubs are in no way in sync with Goa’s culture and the BJP will urge its government not to let one open here, a top party official said Wednesday.
“We are interested in keeping the culture of Goa intact. And from what we know about Playboy, that kind of thing is not our culture,” Goa Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Vinay Tendulkar told reporters here.
The party is facing an internal rebellion over the issue of a proposed Playboy franchise in the beach village of Candolim, 20 km from here.
The BJP’s Goa unit vice president, Wilfred Mesquita, said that the party was in the process of “sorting out the matter” with the government, especially with the franchise promoted by PB Lifestyle, even offering to dress the trademark Playboy bunnies in saris.
“As a party we are against Playboy and we will talk to the government and sort out the matter,” Mesquita said.
The BJP’s north Goa president Michael Lobo has already warned the party against granting permission to start the Playboy club at Candolim.
Lobo, also the local legislator has said that by backing the club, the state government was promoting prostitution.
“I do now know why my government is promoting prostitution, because that is what these brands mean,” Lobo said, even as the state Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar has sought time until Monday to formally decide on the issue of permission to the Playboy club.
