No Russian, Israeli, German mafia in Goa: Parrikar

Panaji, April 16 (IANS) No foreign mafia exists in Goa, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the legislative assembly Tuesday adding that foreigners in Goa were under “unobtrusive” surveillance.

To a question from Congress legislator Reginaldo Lourenco about steps being taken by the government to curb Russian, German and Israeli mafia operating in Goa, Parrikar categorically said: “Russian, German or Israeli mafias are not existing in the state of Goa.”

Over the last few years, a rise in the cocktail of real-estate and narcotics-related offences had fuelled speculation about the Russian mafia operating in Goa.

Legislators across party lines had repeatedly alleged that while the Russian mafia had a vice-like grip on northeastern beach villages of Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol, 40 km from here, a Nigerian mafia was operating closer to the capital in the beach belt from Candolim to Baga, 20 km from here.

Parrikar said foreigners in Goa were now under surveillance.

“Unobtrusive watch is maintained on the activities of foreigners staying in Goa. If any foreigner is found involved in any crime, legal action as per law is taken,” the chief minister said.
