Mamata ‘devastated’ by Presidency vandalism: Vice Chancellor

Kolkata, April 12 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday telephoned Presidency University Vice Chancellor Malabika Sarkar and said she was “devastated” by the vandalism at the varsity by the activists of her party’s students wing.

“The chief minister called me up today (Friday) and said she was devastated with what happened (at the university),” Sarkar told reporters here.

Sarkar said the chief minister, under treatment at a private nursing home here, assured measures would be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

“She assured every possible step to prevent a recurrence and offered total support,” the vice chancellor said.

Armed with sticks and rods, Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad members stormed the Presidency University campus Wednesday. They assaulted students, including women, and vandalised the famous physics department at the varsity.

The hooligans ransacked the century-old Baker Building that houses the physics laboratory where eminent scientists like Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha conducted research.
