Shimla: New police beat system, wherein areas under police stations have been divided into different beats, has been kicked off by the Police department here. The new beat system will function likewise in both urban and rural areas of the state capital.
According to the plan, five policemen with a beat book will be stationed at each of these police beats. They will report to the Superintendent of Police (SP) office fortnightly with their progress reports, and better performers will be honored by the department.
SP Shimla Abhishek Dular said, “The new beat system plan has begun, and better performing beat employees will be honored for their work.”
Main objective behind this plan is to make sure that all incidents of burglary, theft, fights and other incidents can be targeted locally to make the state capital a safer place.
This new system makes beat officers accountable for dealing with the incidents in their respective areas. The beat officers will distribute their mobile numbers to every household in the area, facilitating the residents to directly call the beat officer, instead of calling up the police station, in case of emergency.
The beat officer will be liable for gaining confidence of the residents of his area, and will be responsible for dealing with all the incidents in his jurisdiction. On event of a happening, the beat officer will be accountable for immediately sending constables to the place of incident.
Being locally placed, the police will be able to reach the concerned place well in time.
