Left Front ridicules Mamata’s numero uno claim

Kolkata, April 8 (IANS) Taking a jibe at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim that West Bengal was the number one performing state in the country, the Left Front Monday claimed that the state actually topped the charts in corruption and lawlessness.

“She (Banerjee) is number one because under her the state has topped the country for borrowing from the market, for bringing down alarmingly the quantum of small savings and, of course, lawlessness,” Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra told reporters.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist leader said there was widespread corruption as well as crime in the state.

“Not a single day passes when an incident of crime, especially against women, is not reported. Her government is number one in extorting money and creating an environment of fear and lawlessness in the state,” said Mishra.

Mishra also accorded the numero uno status to Banerjee for her “unprecedented” attack on democratic institutions like the Election Commission and the governor.

“She is surely the number one in attacking democratic institutions. Be it the Election Commission, the Press Council, the governor or the media, she has not spared anybody. Unlike none, our chief minister has been constantly attacking them,” said Mishra.

Mishra’s comments were a reaction to Banerjee’s assertions Monday wherein she blamed the previous Left Front government for financial burden of the state while she claimed West Bengal was the number one performing state despite all hindrances.
