New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) India, which meets almost 80 percent of its energy requirements from overseas purchases, must improve efficiency to cut dependence on imports, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday.
“Higher efficiency really matters a lot,” Chu said in an interactive session with students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, here.
Chu, a distinguished scientist and a co-winner of 1997 Nobel Prize for physics, said improving efficiency was the best way to cut oil import bills in India.
Chu is in New Delhi to attend the fourth international “clean energy ministerial” to be held April 17-18. Energy ministers from more than 20 countries are likely to participate in the meeting.
The US energy secretary said oil import was a big financial drain on the Indian economy and the government must take steps to curb it.
