Chandigarh, April 13 (IANS) Haryana has set a target of producing 90 lakh tonnes of wheat this season, a Food Corporation of India (FCI) official said here Saturday.
Sudhir Garg, FCI northern region executive director, said that Haryana was likely to export 65 lakh tonnes of wheat to other states and abroad this year compared to only 30 lakh tonnes last year.
“The government of India has decided to set up storage silos of three lakh tonnes capacity in Haryana for bulk storage of grains. Each silo with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes would be set up in Rohtak, Jind, Sonipat, Karnal, Sirsa and Kurukshetra to prevent the damage to wheat lying in the open and to maintain their quality,” Garg said.
He said that earlier, large quantities of wheat would get damaged because of lack of storage facility.
Wheat procurement in the state started April 1.
