New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) Badminton’s premier events, the Thomas and Uber Cup finals, will be held in the national capital here next year May 18-25.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Akhilesh Das Gupta announced the dates and the location of Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) two premier tournaments after the official signing ceremony between the BAI and BWF took place here at the Siri Fort Sports Complex Friday.
“It has been wonderful experience for BWF to host the ongoing India Open Super Series. India is the place where badminton began and we are glad to award our two most prestigious tournaments, the Thomas and Uber Cup finals, to India,” said BWF deputy president Paisan Rangsikitpho.
The Thomas Cup (Men`s World Team Championships) was first staged in 1948-49 while the Uber Cup (Women`s World Team Championships) was added in 1956-57.
The Thomas Cup, held every three years initially, was the BWF’s first major international tournament. The Uber Cup finals have been held alongside the men`s competition since 1984 with both taking place biennially since then.
