Jaipur, April 7 (IANS) Curfew, clamped in some parts of the Rajasthan capital city two days ago following communal violence, was relaxed for one and a half hours Sunday with police indicating that the situation is gradually returning to normalcy in the area.
The curfew was imposed Friday in Sanganer area where a minor dispute between people from two communities over parking of a vehicle turned violent Thursday, leaving over 20 people seriously injured.
“We relaxed the curfew for one and a half hours from 11.30 a.m. onwards today (Sunday) so that people can buy necessary items including food and medicines. People were instructed to stay indoors after 1 p.m,” said a senior police officer.
The officer added that the relaxation was not given Friday and Saturday.
“However, as the situation is returning to normalcy, we decided to relax the curfew for one and a half hours,” the officer added.
People Thursday hurled stones at the policemen who were trying to control the situation, torched a factory and damaged over a dozen cars.
In the stone throwing Thursday, several police officers including Jaipur’s acting Commissioner of Police Biju Gorge Joseph, an additional deputy commissioner of police and an assistant commissioner of police sustained injuries, the officer added.
Rioters also set ablaze about a dozen paper factories situated in the area Thursday and Friday, the officer added.
Police have arrested over 100 people since Friday in connection with rioting and breaching curfew restrictions.
