Rio de Janeiro, April 21 (IANS) Botafogo confirmed they are in talks to bring Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz to the Rio de Janeiro football club.
Alvinegro officials met with the 31-year-old’s representatives last week and both parties showed interest in a possible deal this European summer, reports Xinhua.
“I can confirm we are in negotiations but we have financial constraints and for that reason there won’t be any crazy offers made,” Botafogo technical director Sidnei Loureiro said Saturday.
“However if the move is within our budget, he is a player we are very interested in.”
Santa Cruz, whose contract with English Premier League club Manchester City expires June 30, is currently on loan at Spanish La Liga outfit Malaga.
He has won 89 caps for Paraguay and scored 25 goals since his international debut in 1999.
In the past nine months Botafogo have signed former AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf and Uruguay international midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro.
