New Delhi, April 3 (IANS) Delhi Metro has completed 70 percent of work at the new Janpath Metro station which will decongest the bustling Rajiv Chowk Metro station, an official said Wednesday.
Delhi Metro chief Mangu Singh added that the Central ecretariat-Mandi House corridor may be completed by March 2014. This corridor will have two stations: Janpath and Mandi House, an inter-change station.
“Seventy percent of the civil work … is complete. We started the work in October 2011,” he said. “Janpath road, which was closed due to the construction, is now partially open.”
He said priority was being given to the Central Secretariat-Mandi House stretch as it would reduce the burden on the Rajiv Chowk station, which gets some 400,000 commuters a day.
The scheduled deadline is September next year “but we are trying to complete it by March”, Singh told reporters here.
The Janpath station is part of the 9.37 km Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor.
According to Delhi Metro, the tunnel length between Mandi House and Janpath is 1.52 km. It passes under the Nepal embassy, the American Centre and Akshadeep building.
Delhi Metro’s phase three will add another 140 km to the Metro network. With its completion, the DMRC would cover almost 70 percent of Delhi.
Delhi Metro now makes over 2,700 trips a day, covering about 70,000 km and carrying around 1.8 million passengers on week days.
