Dhaka, April 24 (IANS) At least 50 people were killed after an eight-storeyed building on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka collapsed Wednesday morning, an official said.
“At least 50 bodies have so far been recovered,” Israfil Alam, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of labor and employment, told Xinhua.
Niilufar Yasmin, a fire service official, said that the building which houses a ready-made garments factory, a bank’s branch and shops, collapsed around 9 a.m.
With many people believed to be still trapped inside, rescuers fear the toll may rise.
Army personnel were called in to assist in the rescue operation.
Locals also clawed through piles of rubble to search for survivors.
