Srinagar: Around one lakh youth from Jammu and Kashmir would be trained and provided employment outside the state during the next five years, union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said Friday.
Addressing a one-day workshop on women’s interaction organized by the Jammu and Kashmir State Rural Livelihood Mission in central Kashmir’s Badgam district, Ramesh said 15,000 youth would be trained for employment during 2013-2014.
The workshop was held in Khansahib block of Badgam district and local legislator, Hakim Muhammad Yaseen also attended the function.
The central government has so far arranged employment for hundreds of unemployed youths from Jammu and Kashmir in cities outside the state during the last three years under the ambitious ‘Himayat’ programmme.
Told by a local sarpanch (village council chief) that he had not been invited to the function and had come to attend the function after hearing that a union minister was to attend the function, Ramesh said: “Local Sarpanches must be involved in the programme. He should have known what was happening here.”
Ramesh said if panchayats are strong, then alone will democracy be strengthened. He said it was the duty of the government to ensure that the Panchayati Raj which aims at devolution of democracy to the grassroots level is made effective and strong.
