New York: Sony hosted a big media event in New York to introduce the PlayStation 4, but the Japanese electronics titan’s next-gen gaming system never actually made an appearance during the two-hour presentation.
There was also little in way of technical details and no discussion of the price of the new console, which is supposed to be available in time for the Christmas shopping season.
PlayStation 4 will connect with smart phones and tablets and provide the option of remote play via the PlayStation Vita device.
The console, which follows the now-seven-year-old PlayStation 3, is to have streaming capability for connections to services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.
“What we’re creating is the fastest, most powerful network for gaming in the world,” said David Perry, co-founder of the Internet game company Gaikai, bought by Sony last year.
With 8GB of GDDR5 system memory, the PlayStation 4 has the architecture of a “supercharged” PC, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Andrew House, said during the event.
Much of the presentation consisted of samples of new games in development for the PlayStation 4, which will also offer users the ability to create animation in 3-D.
