Guwahati: Assam has asked the central government to hand over to the CBI the cases of rhino poaching in the state, an official said.
The state has sent formal letters to the central government to probe the cases of rhino poaching in Nagaon, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, among others, an official communique said.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in 2012 said that the state government will request the central government to hand over the rhino poaching probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The poachers killed over 12 rhinos in 2012 in various protected areas of the state. A total of eight rhinos have been killed so far in the state since January this year.
