Exit polls should be on entertainment channels: CEC

New Delhi : Amidst a flood of exit polls ahead of assembly election results on March 6, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi Sunday said exit polls should be limited to entertainment channels.

Even as news channels continue to carry surveys and exit polls forecasting trends for the results of assembly election in five states, the poll panel chief, in a comment on microblogging site Twitter, deprecated the trend.

“Opinion and exit polls should best be on entertainment channels,” he tweeted.

The poll panel chief joined Twitter Feb 29.

The Election Commission had banned exit polls till March 3, till the completion of assembly elections in the five states.

In an interview to NDTV earlier Sunday, Qureshi also came out in strong defence of his steps during the polls and refuted the allegation of being biased following action against some leaders.

“(It) hurts me when people accuse me of bias,” Qureshi said.

He also said that government was resisting the proposal to bar tainted candidates.

“Govt resisting our proposal to debar candidates facing criminal charges,” he tweeted about his interview with the channel.
