Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir’s National Conference (NC) president and union New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah Monday said the cinema halls and liquor shops should re-open in the valley to give a fillip to tourism industry in the state.
He was speaking at a function to mark the birth anniversary of the NC founder and former chief minister, Sheikh Abdullah, here.
“What is wrong with cinemas when we watch movies on the television at home?” Farooq Abdullah said.
He said the re-opening of cinema halls and liquor shops would “give a boost to the tourism industry which is the backbone of the local economy”.
“Where will the tourists go in the evening? They cannot remain confined to their hotel rooms. They need recreation,” the NC president said.
Cinema halls and liquor shops were closed in the Kashmir valley in 1990 when militancy reared its head in the state.
