Two held for planting bomb on Advani’s yatra route

Chennai : Two people were arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai Tuesday for allegedly planting a pipe bomb under a bridge near Madurai where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani was to pass on his Jan Chetna yatra last Friday, police said.

According to police, Abdul Rehman and Ismath have been arrested for planting the pipe bomb under a bridge in Alampatti village near Madurai. Both are from Madurai.

Police are investigating their background in detail.

The second leg of Advani’s anti-graft yatra began from Madurai Friday morning.

The pipe bomb packed with eight kg of explosives was discovered Friday following a tip-off from local resident M. Selvaraj. He alerted AIADMK councillor P. Selvam who informed the police.

Police also seized a 25 metre wire connected to it, well before Advani started his anti-graft Jan Chetna Yatra from Madurai, around 450 km from Chennai.

Advani’s nationwide yatra, aimed at fighting black money and corruption, started from Bihar Oct 11 and will end in New Delhi Nov 20.
